HIE is a very dangerous neonatal (infant) brain injury. In fact, HIE is the most common form of infant brain caused by oxygen deprivation. Shortages of blood flow and oxygen flow to the baby’s brain often result in permanent injuries, conditions, and disabilities and, in the worst case, death. Some of the permanent consequences of HIE include cerebral palsy, intellectual impairments, developmental disabilities, seizure disorders and epilepsy, further brain damage (such as periventricular leukomalacia), and neurological issues.

Some of the more common causes of HIE include problems with the umbilical cord (such as nuchal cords, a knot in the umbilical cord, or umbilical cord prolapse), intracranial hemorrhages (brain bleeds), C-section mistakes, fetal monitoring errors, and many others.
