1. Health Care
- Otsego Memorial Hospital: Gaylord’s main medical center, Otsego Memorial Hospital, takes pride in its “progressive, independent, and fully accredited” nature as a care facility. Otsego Memorial Hospital has locations in Gaylord, Boyne Valley, Indian River, and Lewiston, Michigan. In 2012, US News and World Report recognized Otsego Memorial Hospital’s McReynolds Hall in its coverage of the best nursing homes. A second prominent community medical center in Gaylord is the OMH Medcare Walk-In Clinic, which offers services for occupational medicine and urgent care needs. Some clinical services include a birthing center, surgery, intensive care, lab services, nutrition, and rehabilitation. Otsego Memorial Hospital’s rehabilitation and therapy services include physical therapy, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, wound care, and cardiac-pulmonary rehabilitation.

- VitalCare: VitalCare is a nonprofit nursing service organization serving residents of Northern Michigan. Services include visiting nurses, home health aids, medical social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, ventilator management, home oxygen delivery, wellness programs, adult day centers, medical equipment loans, and more. VitalCare is affiliated with McLaren Northern Michigan.
3. Employment
- Crossroads Industries, Inc. is a Gaylord, Michigan nonprofit organization that helps individuals with disabilities gain employment and the skills necessary to integrate more fully into their communities. Programs and services include job skills training, supported employment, job coaching services, community integration, and more.
4. Adaptive Equipment and Assistive Technologies
- TherAdapt®, a company based in Ludington, Michigan, manufactures rehabilitation products and adaptive equipment for special needs children. Operated entirely by therapists, TherAdapt® personnel have the knowledge necessary to provide the most specialized equipment to each individual client. TherAdapt’s products include standers, desks, bathing chairs, adaptive chairs, adaptive car seats, toileting chairs, strollers, walkers, adaptive cycles, and other therapeutic and rehabilitative products. Ludington is a bit far from Gaylord (about 150 miles southwest of Gaylord), but TherAdapt is an excellent resource for children with cerebral palsy all over northern Michigan.

Treatment and Therapy Resources
1. Physical Therapy
- Dynamic Physical Therapy provides physical therapy treatment plans for individuals with cerebral palsy in Northern Michigan. Physical therapy exercises are specifically designed to treat injuries and conditions related to orthopedics, musculoskeletal problems, back and neck pain, neurology, surgical needs, balance disorders, hip, knee, ankle and foot, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, headaches, TMJ, and arthritic conditions. Other services include job analysis, functional capacity evaluations, and other work-related services. Dynamic Physical Therapy has offices in Manistee, Cadillac, Grayling, Buckley, Marion, and Traverse City.
2. Behavioral Therapy and Emotional Counseling
- North Country Community Mental Health provides a range of rehabilitation, treatment, and support services for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health needs. Specific programs and services include adult counseling and therapy, assertive community treatment, child and family services, community support services for persons with developmental disabilities, community support services for persons with mental disabilities, family support services for persons with developmental disabilities, older adult services, and community-based services. North Country Community Mental Health serves cities in the northwest part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula including Gaylord, Charlevoix, Boyne City, Cheboygan, and Mancelona.
3. Recreational Therapy
- Challenge Mountain: Like many cities in northern Michigan, Gaylord is a quaint town renowned for its picturesque and rolling hills, many of which are sought out by avid skiers, golfers, naturalists, and snowmobilers–needless to say, it is an impeccable environment for recreational therapy and sports therapy. In 1984, Darla Evans of Boyne City, Michigan took the steps necessary to extend northern Michigan’s recreational opportunities to those with physical limitations and created Challenge Mountain, a 501(c)(3) organization that fosters adapted outdoor recreation for the mentally and physically disabled. Located about 30 miles northwest of Gaylord, Challenge Mountain offers summer, winter, and transitional zone programs to children with cerebral palsy in northern Michigan.
